How musicians are writing music with code

Technology and art are, of course, inextricably linked, and using software to create music is nothing new — I always think of Herbie Hancock as a pioneer on the early Macs and Amigas; there’s also autotune. This piece from Ars Technica digs into the art of using tools like the visual programming language MAX MSP as well as digging into source code to create music that isn’t just generative or machine learning “from sample mangling to a live algorithmic radio show to preaching the Marxist qualities of open source software”.
