Senators McCain and Coburn tried to kill the National Recreation Trails Program
Thankfully, the amendments were voted down, which means $82 million will go to fund trail building and maintenance in the country’s national parks.
Particularly illogical, although I suppose not for Republicans, is the support from Senator Coburn for killing trail funding. Coburn was one of the leading proponents of legislation allowing concealed weapons in national parks – so I guess the senator from Oklahoma is all for shooting handguns in parks, just not, you know, hiking in them.
Personally, I’m incredibly proud of our national park system. If you’ve never spent a day rebuilding a trail, I highly recommend the experience.
